Getting the best recording quality
OneTake has two recording engines on purpose. The built-in recorder is zero-setup and shines at what most people actually record; OBS mode exists for the heavy cases. This guide is the honest version of when to use which — and the one habit that matters more than any setting.

Pick the engine for the job
Built-in recorder — pick a screen and go. Perfect for app demos, walkthroughs, tutorials, talking over your work. OBS mode— for gameplay, full-screen video and anything where you need every frame: OneTake drives OBS for you, and the snips, timeline and one-take workflow are identical in both. This split isn’t an apology — it’s the design. A zero-setup capture path has real limits, so the engine without those limits is built in right next to it.

Record the whole screen, not a window, when it matters
The single most useful rule in this guide. Capturing a single window runs at about half the frame rate of capturing the whole screen — at any window size, with any content. Window capture is still great for privacy (nothing else can wander into frame), but when smoothness matters, capture the screen and use a clean desktop instead. One more window-capture honesty note: if you resize the window mid-take, the recording keeps the frame it opened with and letterboxes the new shape into it — deliberate, so the file never lies about its own dimensions.

Know what video playback costs
Content is the second factor: video playing on screen captures at roughly half the rateof ordinary desktop work (typing, scrolling, clicking, talking over slides). The two factors compound — a window with video playing in it is the worst corner. Demos and tutorials, recorded as a whole screen, are the built-in recorder’s home ground; a full-screen movie or a game is OBS-mode territory.

A region records less — and that can help
New in 2.1.0: draw a region and record only that, in 9:16, 16:9, 1:1 or 4:5. A region is lighter to record than the whole screen — fewer pixels to encode. In our test, a 9:16 region over playing video recorded at 28 fps where the full screen managed 13–19 on the same machine. One machine, one measurement: it is not a frame-rate setting, and video is still the heavy class — but when your Reel only needs part of the screen, capture only that part. Don’t chase it with settings
Resolution, bitrate and encoder tweaks change file size and sharpness — they do not change the frame rate. That ceiling comes from how browsers’ capture pipelines work: a frame is only produced when the picture changes, and the cost scales with how much changed. (It’s also why a still screen shows a very low rate in stats — nothing moved, so nothing needed capturing. That’s correct, not a fault.) If a recording isn’t smooth enough, change what you capture or which engine captures it — not the dials.

Why we tell you this at all
Most recorder marketing says “capture anything” and lets you find the limits yourself. We’d rather you pick the right engine on take one: the built-in recorder for the everyday cases it’s genuinely good at, OBS mode when the content is heavy. A limitation you were told about is a decision; one you discover mid-recording is a refund.
