Nobody says "um" on purpose. Filler words and long silences are what your brain does while it plans the next sentence — which is why they multiply exactly when you are recording something complicated. Here is how to get cleaner takes today, and what is coming next.
Why you say "um" more on camera
Filler words spike under cognitive load. When you are simultaneously demonstrating software, watching your own screen and narrating, your brain buys planning time with sound. Three habits reduce them at the source:
- Work from an outline. Most fillers happen at transitions you have not planned. Knowing what comes next removes the pause that "um" was filling.
- Embrace the silent pause. A two-second silence reads as confidence to viewers — it is the filled pause that reads as nerves. Train yourself to just… stop, instead of humming.
- Slow down 10%. Fast talkers out-run their planning and backfill with fillers.
Fixing the ones that slip through — today
Silent pauses have a superpower: they are trivial to cut, because nothing is happening. So when you catch yourself in a filler spiral mid-recording, do this: stop talking, breathe, and restate the sentence cleanly — then snip the flubbed span while still rolling. What's coming: local AI that finds them for you

- Silence detection — spans of dead air longer than a threshold you set, proposed as cuts with natural padding.
- Filler-word detection — a local speech-to-text pass (word-level timestamps) that flags "um", "uh" and your own custom list, each one a proposed cut you approve or reject on the timeline.
The important word is local. Detection runs entirely on your machine — your audio is never uploaded to anyone's cloud, which is the same privacy stance the rest of OneTake takes. Proposals land on the same timeline as your manual snips, in a distinct color, and nothing is cut until you say so.
